What is the .law generic Top Level Domain Extension?

The .law domain will be a restricted gTLD that aims to promote trust in the professional legal community. The .law extension will be exclusive to lawyers and it gives them the opportunity to present themselves in a distinctive and memorable way.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for a .law domain name, the applicant must be a qualified lawyer. For the purposes of the .law gTLD, a qualified lawyer is a professional who is licensed and is allowed to practice law by an approved regulator of legal services in a given jurisdiction. Lawyers must also be identifiable as a currently-licensed practitioners in the public records kept by the relevant approved regulator.

In order to register a .law domain name, registrants must provide the following information during registration:

• Name as registered by their regulator
• The official name of their regulator
• The year of registration with their regulator
• The license number of their registration with their regulator
• The jurisdiction of their regulator

.law gTLD Requirements

.law is a “Regulated Domain” which is subject to additional requirements mandated by ICANN.

Legal Compliance: Registrants must comply with all applicable laws, including laws relating to privacy, data collection, consumer protection (including in relation to misleading and deceptive conduct) and applicable consumer laws in respect of fair lending, debt collection, organic farming (if applicable), disclosure of data and financial regulations;


2. Health and Financial Information: Registrants must acknowledge and agree that those who collect and maintain sensitive health and financial data must implement reasonable and appropriate security measures commensurate with the offering of those services, as defined by applicable law;
