Expiry Protection

Ownership Protection for Domain Names

Retain ownership of your domain for up to one-year even if renewal is unsuccessful

Safeguard Domain Names with Expiry Protection

Prevent accidental domain name expiry

Even domain names that are set to auto-renew can lapse in rare cases if credit card information is out-of-date, or if a payment fails. Domain names that are not setup with auto-renew may be at an even higher risk.

Expiry protection can be applied to most popular domain names, but not every TLD or ccTLD is eligible.

How accidental domain expiry occurs

Every year domain names, often with services attached to them, accidentally expire.

Staff churn, emergencies, vacations are just some reasons that could result in a missed domain renewal.

Expiry protection protects your domain names from this, and other vulnerabilities such as out-of-date contact information, ensuring that your domain name will not expire and face the risk of being registered by someone else.

When Domain Expiry Protection is used with Webnames’ 5-touchpoint renewal notification process and auto-renew, valuable domain names are comprehensively protected from unintentional expiry that can lead to unexpected domain redemption and restoration fees, or worse, protracted and costly acquisition from a third party.

Frequently Asked Questions

Services associated with your domain name will cease to function after a 30-day Grace Period; your domain name, however, will remain securely in your webnames account.

When a domain name expires it first enters a 30-day Renewal Grace Period, where it can still be renewed at Webnames without penalty. Following that, there is another 30-day Redemption Period that is controlled by the registry during which associated services will cease to function. During this period the renewal can still be initiated within your Webnames account, but is subject to an additional redemption fee from the registry operator. After a total of 60-days post expiry, the domain name enters a Pending Delete period that lasts for 5-days. Once the registry deletes the domain, it becomes available for registration on a first-come-first-served basis to anyone

Letting a domain name that’s seen active use expire, especially one that is tied to your brand or business, can be a risky proposition because you never know who might wind up registering it and what it will be used for. During its lifetime, a domain name accumulates a history that can make it valuable to different registrants with different motivations. While it might get registered in good faith by another business owner, cyber criminals also utlize expired domains that formerly websites or email accounts for phishing and ecommerce fraud. If you decide you no longer want expiry protection, you can still opt to have only standalone Domain Privacy Protection for CAD $10/year, or simply opt out of both packages at the time of renewal if you so choose. If for some reason you wish to let your domain lapse, go to Domain Actions, turn off auto renew, then select "allow this domain to expire".
